Casino Self Storage: “We contracted with Self StorageWorks in 2002 to help with design, layout and entitlement of our new self storage project. Greg Call attended all of the planning and city council meetings, and was instrumental in securing approval after a protracted battle with the city. Self Storage Works was then hired to start up the facility and manage the construction process. The end result was that our facility opened on time and on budget, and we exceeded all revenue and lease-up projections.

History

Self StorageWorks has deep roots that date back to founder Greg Call’s first storage-focused company—The Call Company. Established in 1981, the company’s first assignment was to turn around a one-year-old self-storage facility that was only 20% occupied. The owner was ready to give it back to the bank when he decided to try one last time to turn his failing business around by bringing in the Call Company. Within six months the facility was up to 90% occupancy and the owner sold the business for a very nice profit. 

The Call Company built upon this early success and grew its management portfolio to more than 40 self-storage properties over the next five years. By 1990 the company had expanded into other areas that included brokerage and property development. These two businesses also began to take off and the company quickly became one of the most successful storage brokerages in the West, while the development division helped to create more than 50 new facilities over a five year period in California, Hawaii and Nevada. 

Self StorageWorks was created in 2001 when Call divided the Call Company with his partner and went out on his own. The new company’s first client was Southern California Edison, which was looking to generate more revenue from the land located on their power transportation grids throughout Southern California. Self StorageWorks was hired to research 80 potential sites for the development of self and RV storage facilities, as well as educating Edison's real estate group. Call identified 22 sites, which were used in an RFP (Request For Proposal) that was sent to the top 30 self-storage developers in the country. Today Self StorageWorks is the consultant of choice for the largest development portfolio of self-storage sites in the history of the industry.
